Well, it’s pretty well unanimous, isn’t it?

Yesterday I asked my friends and followers to choose a track we could all purchase (either digitally or physically) to try and stop the X Factor single getting the coveted Christmas No. 1.

I don’t hate X Factor – I applaud Simon Cowell for what he’s created. I just feel as though we need something fresh for Christmas this year. And yes, I realise my campaign won’t stop everyone going and buying the X Factor record, but maybe, just maybe, we can stop it becoming the Christmas Number 1.

So… you’ve all spoken, and by popular demand the track is…

Andrea Bocelli – White Christmas

Whether you like his music or not, you can’t deny the guy has an incredible voice and a great story – far more interesting a yarn than anything any X Factor contestant can spin. Read the rest of this entry »

I don’t know how many of my readers watch X Factor – a large number I suspect, given the chatter on Twitter over the past few weeks.

But don’t you think it’s getting rather boring? For the last umpteen years, the Christmas No. 1 single has been an Celebrity Pop Factor Idol winner. It begs the question… what about the real records?

Okay, okay, so they ARE real records. But it’s not the same.

So. myself and a few friends have decided to start an anti-XFactor campaign. Nothing sinister, just trying to get everyone with a spare couple of quid and some sense to all buy the same record in the hope of stopping the X Factor winner Joe McElderry from claiming the top spot. In: Social Media

2 Dec 2009

OK, first off… a quick apology.

I was laid up in bed all week with a cold/flu type thing. Hallucinating while trying to sleep, sleeping while trying to be awake… you know how it goes. Whenever I get anything I’m usually a complete knock out, so I’m sorry for the silence everywhere.

The good news is I’m back! And I have something to share with you…

I recently setup a Posterous account. The reason behind it originally was to have a place where I could post bits of code, links to useful stuff, etc. I looked at Evernote, but it seemed complicated and not suited to posting different types of media. Plus I had to login to view it…

With Posterous I can not only view my links anywhere in the world (and share them with you guys), but I can also easily post from the iPod and by emailing them various snippets. That’s really handy!

A Weekend With Martin

In: Life

18 Nov 2009

Last weekend, Martin - my best mate for years, came up. I haven’t seen him for ages. In fact, last time I saw him was before I met Rach, so that tells you how long ago it was!

Now, when Martin comes… things tend to degenerate fairly quickly into an episode of Men Behaving Badly. But that’s good… kind of why we do it really. It’s a switch off from work (supposedly), and just a few days where we can be generally bloke-ish – play video games and watch gansta flicks while drinking Jagermeiester and eating… Haribo? Seriously…

We spent most of the weekend playing Guitar Hero and Project Gotham on the XBox360, and watched The Dark Knight, and Coraline in 3D (see embarrassing photo of Martin wearing his 3D glasses!).

He also met Rach… well, virtually anyway! Hopefully they will meet soon…

We talked lots, drank too much (as ever), and just generally had a complete relax. That was until Monday when my whole social media world went crazy… calls, texts, Twitter convos. It was hard to keep up, and hard to talk properly to Martin. For that I’m still apologising!

All that said, we did manage to have a few computer / social media discussions, prompting to go sign up for Spotify, Skype and Twitter when he got home! (For those interested, his Twitter feed is here).

Great weekend mate – let’s not leave it 6months yeah?

A good while ago, my dad purchased a 3 mobile contract to get his hands on a sexy new phone – the LG U990 (or Viewty, to give it’s cute name).

It’s a lovely phone, but he never uses it. And the plan always to cancel the contract as soon as we could, get it unlocked, and go back to the Orange “Virgin tariff” thing he was on before – basically paying less than £1 per month!

So, today was the day to ring 3 Customer Services. I went online, logged on, no “cancel contract” link (not suprisingly), so I went to the Contact Us page and got the number, and that’s when it started to get on my nerves. Read the rest of this entry »

Sometimes you just need to give up and accept that things aren’t going you way. That’s hard for me to take, I’ll admit, but just sometimes, even I have to give up…

One such occasion happened on Sunday, shortly after the last race of the Formula 1 season. I needed to write an article about the race (which you can read here), but we had a powercut! Everything came back okay, except the broadband…

For the life of me, I could NOT get the modem to reconnect. I tried for hours.

After giving up hope on that, I remembered AOL had given me a modem when we signed up. I knew it was a USB jobbie, but at least I could get online and write my post. Well, that was the theory…

It turns out that AOL and BT (the makers of the modem) didn’t really think through the product, designed as it was for Windows XP. I don’t have a PC with XP anymore, so I tried my luck with Vista. Got to the end of installation… “can’t install modem”. And it rolled back. Read the rest of this entry »

Thanks For The Frog!

In: Life

26 Oct 2009

Yes, that’s right. A Frog. Like this one…

Except this one is in it’s natural habitat… some watery marshy place where it feels at home. Not, as the one that me and Rachel found at 3am this morning, hopping round the living room!

Jewel (one of Rae’s cats) decided it would be fun to catch and bring home a frog last night. So, at 3am I was awoken by a strange creaking noise. The kind of sound you’d find at the beginning of Michael Jackson’s ‘Thriller’. I listened, and then dropped off again. Next thing, it happened again. I woke up, so I listen again.

This time I heard it a third time, so decided to wake Rae.

She heard something herself, and went down to get Jewel. The noise stopped, so we let Jewel go. She shot downstairs so fast…

Anyway, we thought she was just being a cat. So we settled back down, only to hear more strange noises. So Rae went to investigate…

Next thing I heard was “oh my god cat!” and the words “she’s brought a frog in”. I was called to help with the recovery operation.

Now, at the time, the frog wasn’t moving. It didn’t look injured or dead, but it didn’t particularly look alive either. Neither of us wanted to touch it (something I fear I’m never going to hear the end of…) so we decided to find a dustpan to take it outside. Read the rest of this entry »

I downloaded Google Chrome earlier. Haven’t used it in a while, so thought I’d give it a go on the new laptop.

It’s well speedy, and works really well.

One odd thing though: whenever I type Google into Facebook or here on the blog (or anywhere for that matter), it underlines it and tries to tell me to change it to Goggle. Quite hilarious really! It doesn’t even come up with Googol, the mathematical term that Sergey and Brin meant to register as a domain name originally.

So, if you see me talking about Goggle Wave any time soon, you know why….

I have to admit I was quite looking forward to Nick Griffin appearing on Question Time yesterday.

I’ll say upfront that I’m NOT a BNP supporter (anyone that knows me will tell you that), but I do believe in Free Speech and have to hand it to the BBC for upholding that part of our country’s moral standing.

Well, that was the theory anyway.

Sadly, it became apparent rather quickly that the BBC had planned what can only be described as a “badger baiting” session for this weeks Question Time, filling the audience with over-sensitive individuals probably pulled from the protesters outside. Read the rest of this entry »

Do you have what it takes?!

As my network of websites grows, it obviously takes up more and more time… writing, planning, tweaking SEO, managing freelancers, etc. That’s great – it’s what I want to be doing. But when I also have a 2d/pw job at darts, and Musoswire to run, it becomes difficult to warrant the time (and expenditure) to keep all this running.

That’s why – as of today – I’m looking for an Advertising Salesperson. I can’t pay much (I’m thinking a percentage of the revenue you bring in), but given that I have 15 websites currently in the network (and more in the pipeline), there is definitely potential for the right person.

(see below for a list of current sites)

If I can start generating revenue for these sites, I can devote more time to them. And as I do that, they’ll get more visitors and we can charge more for advertising. And so the circle starts, benefiting both me and whoever is selling the advertising.

So who is the right person? Read the rest of this entry »
